About Us
The goal with Zeam is to create a better flow for city life. The brand was established in 2023 under the Norwegian shipping company Torghatten, which has been around for over 150 years. Development has been done in collaboration with Zeabuz, a world leader in self-driving technology for the maritime sector.
Making Urban Life Flow
Zeam's goal is to create a better flow for city life. We aim to create an environmentally and economically sustainable mobility concept on water in urban environments. With fully electric propulsion combined with solar panels, we provide an emission-free service that minimizes stress on the power grid. Unlike a bridge, Zeam offers a flexible solution, and by reclaiming the use of waterways, urban mobility is strengthened. This contributes to making city environments more sustainable, connected, and accessible to everyone.

A Smarter Ferry
Zeam is not only fast and smooth, but also smart and controlled by a computer. The computer ensures perfect visibility day and night, understanding its surroundings, and safely guiding you across. There is always an operator on board who continuously monitors the system and is ready to take control for added safety. The vision is that the operator in the future can be on land, overseeing one or more ferries simultaneously, without compromising safety.
Background
Although Zeam is a new product, a lot of research backs the concept. The idea of autonomous city ferries began at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology, NTNU, in Trondheim. The concept was developed by experienced researchers who, in 2017, created the first prototype called MilliAmpere. MilliAmpere was a small ferry operating a 100-meter crossing in central Trondheim, where much testing of the technology took place. This led to the founding of Zeabuz in 2019 to further develop and commercialize the technology. A larger prototype was developed, called MilliAmpere 2, completed in 2021. MilliAmpere 2 was tested in public service for four weeks in 2022, transporting 1,500 passengers without any intervention from a captain. At the same time, the Norwegian shipping company Torghatten became a part-owner of Zeabuz and joined the project as an operator. Zeam was created as a brand, designed to represent a new mobility concept with small and autonomous electric city ferries. Torghatten decided to launch a new ferry route in Stockholm across Riddarfjärden, and the first ferry, MF Estelle, has been in operation since June 8, 2023, specially designed for the conditions over Riddarfjärden.
